While Giuliano Simeone's late equaliser snatched a crucial point for Diego Simeone's side, the match was overshadowed by the hostile reception given to Julián Alvarez.

Alvarez jeered; Lookman failed to earn cheers

The standout moment of the tie came midway through the second half when Diego Simeone introduced Julián Álvarez in the 66th minute.

Making his first home appearance since lodging an official transfer request to Barcelona, the Argentine forward was greeted by a deafening barrage of boos and whistles from the Metropolitano faithful.

Alvarez made minimal impact during his 24 minutes on the pitch, completing just eight passes, and was visibly displeased by the jeers, which could further strenghen his resolve to leave.

Compounding Atlético's early-season attacking friction, Nigerian international Ademola Lookman endured a quiet afternoon.

Neutralised by Villarreal’s backline, Lookman failed to register a single shot on target. His frustrating performance ended in the 78th minute when he was unceremoniously subbed off immediately after Villarreal took the lead.

Explosive second half defines tie

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the encounter exploded into chaotic action following the interval

Defender Marc Pubill opened the scoring for Atlético, firing a curler with his weak foot to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

Villarreal quickly equalised when Gerard Moreno converted a spot-kick following a defensive foul in the area.

The balance of power shifted when Atlético centre-back Robin Le Normand received a straight red card for bringing down a surging Villarreal attacker as the last man.

Capitalising on their numerical advantage, Villarreal won a second penalty, which Georges Mikautadze buried past Jan Oblak to put the visitors up 2-1. Simeone immediately withdrew Lookman for centre-back José María Giménez to stabilise his backline.

Despite playing a man down, Atlético clawed back a point when substitute Giuliano Simeone found space in the box and lashed home a powerful finish to make it 2-2.

With two penalties, a red card and a late equaliser, it was the kind of game that rewards anyone who placed a football bet in-play.

What the result means

The draw leaves both sides with mixed emotions early in the 2026/27 LaLiga season. Dropping points at home puts Atlético on the back foot ahead of a busy schedule, though their late fightback with ten men preserved their unbeaten start. Simeone’s side must now resolve internal squad tensions before travelling to face Espanyol in midweek action.

For Villarreal, failing to close out a victory against a ten-man opponent stings, but earning a point at one of the league's most difficult venues positions them well ahead of their upcoming home fixture against Celta Vigo.
