What Babangida said

Babangida, speaking to Tribal Football, described the World Cup miss as “very painful to digest,” but emphasized that the AFCON presents a timely opportunity for redemption.

“The next target is the AFCON tournament, which can be used to redeem the image of Nigerian football,” he said.

He urged the Nigeria Football Federation, coaching crew, and players to unite and focus fully on bringing the trophy back home.

Babangida acknowledged that the tournament will be challenging, especially with several World Cup-bound African teams also qualifying for AFCON.

However, he remains confident in the Super Eagles’ potential.

“The tournament will not be easy…but the Super Eagles may surprise the world and go all the way,” he said.

He added, “I think the team can bring the Cup back to Nigeria after more than 12 years. I see Nigeria playing in the final, at least, and anything can happen in a cup final.”

The Super Eagles were runners-up in the last AFCON edition, losing 2-1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in a tense final.
