Why I asked my players to walk away - Senegal coach opens up on AFCON final controversy
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has revealed that he personally instructed his players to leave the pitch during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Morocco, citing what he described as injustice and poor officiating.
The dramatic incident unfolded late in Sunday’s final after the referee, following a VAR review, awarded a penalty to host nation Morocco.
In protest, the Senegalese players walked off the field, halting the match for several minutes before eventually returning to complete the game.
What Thiaw said
After leading Senegal to a historic second AFCON title, Thiaw addressed the controversy in a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, offering insight into his decision.
“We experienced an exceptional tournament with magnificent organisation, which unfortunately ended in tragedy. It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game that I love so much,” Thiaw wrote.
The Senegal coach framed the walk-off as an emotional reaction aimed at shielding his squad from what he perceived as unfair treatment by match officials.
“I simply tried to protect my players from injustice. What some will see as a violation of the rules is nothing more than an emotional reaction to the bias of the situation,” he continued.
Thiaw explained that the team ultimately chose to continue the game for the sake of their supporters and the nation.
“After discussions, we decided to return and fight for the trophy for our people,” he noted.
Senegal went on to secure a 1–0 victory after extra time, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal to crown the Lions of Teranga champions.
While standing by his motives, Thiaw offered an apology for the incident and appealed for empathy from football stakeholders.
“I apologise if I offended anyone, but football lovers will understand that emotion is an integral part of this sport,” he said.
The coach concluded his statement with glowing praise for his squad, highlighting their commitment and sacrifice throughout the tournament.
“You are 28 warriors who gave sweat, blood, and soul for your nation. It’s a pleasure to lead you because, beyond being legends, you are exceptional people,” Thiaw wrote.
