We needed it – Chelsea boss reacts to 4-0 victory over Southampton

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca praised his players following the resounding 4-0 victory they enjoyed over struggling Southampton. 

With two-thirds of the season gone, Chelsea were inside the top three and were looking like contenders for the  Premier League. However, their form in recent weeks—five defeats and three draws in their last 10 Premier League matches before tonight—has seen them slip outside the top four together. 

Maresca’s side put in a decent shift against Saints, and thanks to goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella, they returned to the top, albeit before Manchester City play Tottenham.

Speaking about the game, the Italian tactician praised their performance, but more importantly, the result, stressing out important for them to escape the rut. 

"We all needed that,” Maresca said, per the BBC. “We were in a bad run in term of results. The performance was always there maybe except against Brighton. The club needed that. We are happy.

"In these month and half has been when I have pushed players even more to believe in the process. Since we started, we have almost been in the top four. 

“But now it's normal to go through some bad moments. It's about how we react and how we continue to believe in what we do. The players are fantastic and worked hard every day."
