We are building a championship team — Lakers star shares gleefully after signing contract until 2028
Luka Dončić will be a Los Angeles resident until 2028, having signed a three-year contract extension with the Lakers.
The Slovenian superstar spoke about his experience with the team so far, his championship aspirations, and his desire to make his mark on the Lakers' legacy.
Dončić's comments:
"I'd like to say thank you; you've welcomed me with open arms. Thanks to Mark (Walter), Jeanie (Buss), JJ (Redick), and Rob (Pelinka). The whole organization has embraced me, and I'm really looking forward to the new season."
On when he realised he wanted to stay with the Lakers: "Obviously not the moment I was traded, but as I started playing, I knew I wanted to be here. This is a fantastic organisation, we have confidence in each other, and my decision came very quickly."
On how it feels to be a Laker: "It's a real honor; it's an amazing organization. You know, playing for this team, with so many great players who have worn this jersey... obviously, I want to get my jersey up in the rafters too, so I'll work for it."
On how much he wants the championship this season: "I honestly believe we have a great team. We have to fight for the championship. We're ready to win every game; we have some fantastic new players on the team, and we'll fight for the title."
On the role he played in Ayton and Smart signing with the Lakers: "We want to build a championship team. We have two amazing players who I've played against in the past, so I'm happy they're on my team now." On how easy the decision was to sign the contract extension: "Like I said, being a Laker is an honor, and I wanted to stay here. When you look around, there are so many names of great players who played here, and I want my name to be written here someday."
On his physical transformation: "It's a new beginning for me. Obviously, I'm still in the process of getting in shape, but it's a fresh start. I've had time to think about basketball and do other things, so like I said, it's a new beginning."
On how he feels after the trade: "Much better. Honestly, I'm really excited and can't wait to get started. Preseason with my teammates will help us a lot for the new season." On the areas he wants to improve after his physical transformation: "I want to be better at everything, faster. I have Marcus (Smart), who can teach me a thing or two about improving my defense (laughs), but this change will help me a lot."
