Transfer news: Arsenal make deadline day move for Newcastle star Tonali following Merino’s injury
Manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly acting swiftly to find cover in midfield following a significant injury to Mikel Merino.
The Spanish midfielder is set to undergo foot surgery and is expected to be out for an extended period.
The two clubs are understood to be in talks, with time rapidly running out to complete any potential deal.
Arsenal make move on Tonali
Sources indicate that Arsenal faces a major hurdle, as Newcastle is reportedly unwilling to sell the Italian international at any price.
A source at St. James' Park dismissed the speculation as "complete rubbish," emphasising that no offer or approach has been made, nor would one be entertained.
Tonali, 25, has been a pivotal figure for manager Eddie Howe since returning from his suspension for betting-related offences.
The midfielder is under a long-term contract with Newcastle until 2029, which includes an option for an additional year, and is reportedly settled in the North East with his family.
Having joined from AC Milan in 2023 for a fee of £60 million, it is highly unlikely that Newcastle would consider his departure for anything less than a substantial profit.
Despite this, a desperate Arsenal might be prepared to pay a premium to avoid being short-handed in midfield for the remainder of the season.
