Speaking on talkSPORT ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea, Bent noted that Lewis-Skelly has found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter under Mikel Arteta this campaign.

What Bent said

According to Bent, the emergence of Riccardo Calafiori has played a major role in limiting Lewis-Skelly’s opportunities. The Italian defender has impressed since his arrival, making it harder for the academy graduate to earn consistent minutes.

“He’s had a tougher time this season. What he did last season, everyone said, ‘Wow!” Bent said.

“What he’s had to deal with in terms of coming back, Calafiori has been really good this season, which is why he hasn’t played a lot of minutes,” he added.

Bent also pointed to Lewis-Skelly’s recent outing in the FA Cup against Portsmouth, describing the performance as underwhelming and suggesting it highlighted some of the challenges the young defender is currently facing.

Despite the criticism, Bent expects Lewis-Skelly to feature against Chelsea, viewing the semi-final as a chance for the teenager to respond and regain confidence.

Arsenal travel to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, January 14, to face their London rivals in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
