Randy Waldrum: 5 interesting things about Super Falcons coach

Randy Waldrum is a seasoned women's football coach who recently led the Super Falcons to a relatively successful World Cup campaign.

The American overturned a run of poor results that had plagued the Super Falcons during his reign as coach in the later preparation for the World Cup, and the Falcons carried the momentum into the tournament.

Earlier calls for his sack have mostly been quelled following a run of seven games in which the Nigerian women's national team have been unbeaten in regular play, including games from the World Cup.

The Falcons, thanks to Waldrum's setup, went through the group stage of the competition without a loss, beating co-hosts and eventual semi-finalists Australia. 

They were knocked out by England in the Round of 16, but the Three Lionesses, who were eventual finalists themselves, needed the uncertainties of penalty shootouts to vanquish the Falcons.  

Waldrum cuts a reserved figure on the touchline, but he can be an interesting character. We have collected X interesting things to know about the man who led the Super Falcons to a near-historic World Cup campaign. 

The 66-year-old is one of the not-many who can claim to be experts in women's football coaching, with limited exposure and investment in relation to the men's game.  

He has dedicated almost his entire career to coaching women, boasting an impressive CV in charge of female teams. 

In a career spanning 45 years, he has coached nine separate women's teams and even founded entire women's football programmes, like the Baylor University soccer programme he launched in 1996. 

Waldrum is not so special in this case and is another example of the professional football player-to-coach pipeline.  

He played primarily in his home country, the USA, and according to Wikipedia, he played for three separate teams in the American Soccer League.  

He played as a midfielder for the Los Angeles Skyhawks, the Indianapolis Daredevils, and Pele's New York Cosmos.  

The Super Falcons boss is seemingly a Manchester United fan, as he has put out tweets suggesting he is a Red Devil.

As Pulse Sports reported previously, he reacted to the rollercoaster ride that was Manchester United's victory over Nottingham Forest via his X account. 

The Texas-born football coach—in a FIFA manager career mode type of way—oversees two different football teams at a time.

He is the coach of the Nigerian women's national team and also doubles as the coach of a college football team, the University of Pittsburgh women's team. 

Despite his advanced age and busy schedule coaching two different teams, coach Randy Waldrum is very active on the social media platform X (Twitter). 

The former University of Tulsa boss tweets regularly, either quoting clips from football highlights or sharing his opinions, like his criticism of the recent FIFA Women's national team rankings.
