Since retiring from playing, Rooney has pursued a managerial career, beginning at Derby County, where he worked under difficult financial constraints and points deductions before the club’s eventual relegation.

He later managed D.C. United, Birmingham City, and most recently Plymouth Argyle, with mixed results.

Currently working as a pundit, Rooney insists he is not rushing back into a head coach position.

What Rooney said

However, he would consider a return to the dugout in a supporting capacity, if approached by one of his former clubs.

“One hundred per cent, yeah,” Rooney said when asked if he would take on an assistant role.

He added, “I got asked a few weeks ago whether I’d go back to United in a different role. Of course I would.”

Rooney made it clear that his emotional ties would limit any such move strictly to Manchester United or Everton.

“Probably the only two clubs I’d go back to, not as a manager, are Everton and United because they’re the two clubs close to my heart,” he explained.

“It’s a no-brainer. I’m not begging for a job here, by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I were asked to go in, of course I would,” he added.

Rooney remained one of the most iconic figures in Manchester United’s history, standing as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances.
