Rooney warns Arteta could face pressure if Arsenal miss out on Premier League title
Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has suggested that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could come under serious scrutiny if the Gunners fail to convert their strong league position into a Premier League title this season.
Despite Arsenal currently sitting six points clear at the top of the table, Rooney believes expectations at the Emirates have risen sharply due to the club’s heavy financial backing and the strength of the squad assembled in recent transfer windows.
What Rooney said
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the D.C. United head coach argued that sustained investment inevitably brings heightened pressure.
“Arsenal have really backed Arteta, especially this season. He’s been given a top squad, so if they don’t go on to win the league, there will definitely be pressure on him,” Rooney said.
Rooney, who experienced multiple title races during his time at Manchester United, also highlighted the psychological challenge of leading the table while being chased by a relentless rival like Manchester City.
Reflecting on City’s win over Liverpool, he explained how quickly momentum can shift and how mentally draining it can be to monitor competitors.
“It has a massive effect. You end up wasting energy watching other teams’ results. I’m sure Arteta will be telling his players to focus only on what they can control,” Rooney said.
The former striker warned that overanalysing fixtures and calculating potential points totals can become a dangerous distraction in the closing stages of a title race.
“You can get caught up looking at what others might do, how many points they’ll get. But in the end, the only thing that matters is winning your own games,” Rooney added.
