‘Let's not focus on that’ - Arteta dismisses nine-point lead after Sunderland victory
The Gunners are aiming to secure their first league title since their historic "Invincibles" campaign in 2004.
Following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal extended their lead over second-placed Manchester City.
However, with City set to face Liverpool at Anfield—a ground where they have historically struggled—Arteta remains focused on the task ahead rather than the current standings.
Arteta speaks on nine point lead
When asked about the nine-point gap, the Spanish manager was quick to temper expectations. "Nothing," he told reporters.
"We still have to win so many games to achieve what we want, so let's not focus on that. We've done our job now... assess that, try to improve it and get ready for Brentford."
The win against Sunderland marked Arsenal's second consecutive league victory, with striker Viktor Gyökeres netting a brace.
Arteta singled out the forward for praise, highlighting his mentality and work ethic since joining the club.
"[He is] the type of character that we expected," Arteta said of Gyökeres. "When you put that shirt on, it comes with a lot of responsibility and huge expectations. And you need to live with that."
The manager elaborated on the striker's professional attitude, adding: "I love his character, the way he approaches every single day...
“For me, what really makes a difference is the consistency that he shows every single day, to practice, to train, to understand better his teammates."
Arsenal's packed schedule continues with a midweek away fixture against Brentford. Following that, they will face Wigan Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
