Oluyole Warriors ‘set to school’ Inter Lagos as NPFL 2026/27 kicks off with South-West derby

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2026/27 season gets underway on Friday with a mouthwatering South-West derby as Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) host Inter Lagos at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the clash marking the official curtain-raiser for a new campaign expected to deliver another fiercely competitive title race.

Even before a ball has been kicked, Shooting Stars have won plenty of attention with a clever pre-match dig at their opponents.

The Ibadan club unveiled matchday graphics designed like a school textbook titled “Steps to Quantitative Reasoning in the NPFL – Matchday 1: Special Edition for Newly Promoted Team.”

The design casts the Oluyole Warriors as experienced teachers ready to educate Inter Lagos on the realities of life in Nigeria's top flight.

Shooting Stars, the five-time league champions, are one of Nigeria's most historic clubs and enter the season after finishing third in the 2025/26 campaign.

That impressive finish secured their return to the CAF Confederation Cup, ending a 27-year absence from continental football.

With club chairman Hon. Taiwo Lekan Salami overseeing renewed ambition at Adamasingba, expectations are high that 3SC can mount another strong challenge this season.

Inter Lagos, meanwhile, are writing a different story. The Lagos-based club earned promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) after an impressive campaign and will now experience the demands of the NPFL for the very first time.

This is far more than a routine opening fixture. Ibadan versus Lagos has always carried an element of regional pride, and Friday's contest adds another chapter to that rivalry.

For the home supporters at the Lekan Salami Stadium, the objective is clear: start the season with three points while celebrating their return to continental competition.
