Mourinho to Real Madrid: Special One already facing push back from club legend
José Mourinho’s potential return to Real Madrid CF is already generating fierce debate despite no formal approach being made.
With pressure mounting on current boss Álvaro Arbeloa, the Portuguese manager has emerged as the leading candidate in the eyes of club president Florentino Perez to take over at the Santiago Bernabéu this summer.
Mourinho among contenders as Arbeloa future hangs in balance
Real Madrid are increasingly expected to consider a managerial change at the end of the season, with Arbeloa’s position growing more precarious amid the prospect of a second consecutive campaign without major silverware.
Club president Florentino Pérez is reportedly leaning toward appointing a more experienced manager should a vacancy arise, and Mourinho is understood to be one of the names under serious consideration.
The Portuguese tactician previously managed Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup during his spell in charge.
Reports suggest Mourinho is open to a return, believing he still has unfinished business at the Bernabéu.
Guti questions whether Mourinho is still the right man
However, not everyone within Madrid circles is convinced. Club legend Guti Hernández has publicly voiced concerns over the idea of bringing Mourinho back, saying, “Mourinho is a great coach, but I think his prime phase is not now.”
He added that while Mourinho remains a respected figure, there are “coaches in a better state” that Real Madrid should consider instead.
For now, no direct talks have taken place between Madrid and Mourinho’s camp, with the club waiting to make a final decision on Arbeloa’s future.
But if Los Blancos finish the season trophyless again, the pressure for change may become impossible to ignore, and Mourinho’s name will only grow louder in the conversation.
