It will not be the same — Mourinho sends emotional message to Lionel Messi

The Real Madrid manager reacted after Messi confirmed his retirement from international football on social media.

Mourinho wrote: “Congratulations on a brilliant and unforgettable international career. The next Copa America and the next World Cup won’t be the same.”

Messi, 39, brought the curtain down on an extraordinary era with the Albiceleste on Monday.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner leaves the national team as its all-time leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 appearances. He captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and two Copa America triumphs.

In an emotional statement, Messi admitted the decision was painful.

“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this one hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. I’ve given it my all, I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance.”

Mourinho and Messi crossed paths many times during the Portuguese coach’s spells at Chelsea and Real Madrid. Despite their rivalry on the pitch, the Special One’s message reflected deep respect for one of football’s greatest players.

Messi will now focus fully on Inter Miami, where he remains under contract until 2028. Argentina, under Lionel Scaloni, must now adapt to life without their talismanic captain as they look ahead to future tournaments.
