Ireland 1-2 Netherlands: Look away Manchester United fans, Weghorst scored again

Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is back to his best following another heroic performance for the Netherlands.

Weghorst was the super-sub as the Netherlands continued their resurgence after a 2-1 win against Ireland on Sunday. 

The visitors were forced to come from behind, with Weghorst proving decisive again as the Orange made it back-to-back wins. 

Ireland suffered heartbreak at home despite a positive start against the Netherlands who looked shaky in the opening minutes. 

A Virgil van Dijk blunder saw the referee award an early penalty to the home side who looked to put behind them the defeat to France on Thursday.

Irish-born Nigerian youngster Adam Idah gave them the perfect start when he kept his calm to slot home from 12 yards. 

But the home side failed to hold on to the lead as Gavin Bazunu hacked Denzel Dumfries in the box to give the Netherlands a lifeline. 

Cody Gakpo stepped up to convert to draw the away side level and save his clubmate, van Dijk, his blushes heading into the break. 

The Orange took control of the game thereafter and 10 minutes after he was subbed on, Weghorst produced the decisive winner for the Dutch.

It was his second winner in as many matches after he sealed the deal against Greece the last time.

With the win, the Netherlands have now banished the memory of their back-to-back losses to move up to second place in Group B. 

For Ireland, the hopes of reaching a first major tournament since 2016 looks to be heading to the south following another defeat.
