He cited club legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney as examples of players who also spent time on the bench.

The 20-year-old England international's future at Old Trafford has been a subject of speculation during the summer transfer window.

After a summer transfer request was denied, Mainoo has yet to start a Premier League match this season, fueling rumours of a potential January move, with Napoli reportedly interested.

Amorim urges Mainoo

Amorim insists that being a substitute at a club like Manchester United is part of a young player's development.

"Kobbie needs to fight for his job. It is not a bad thing to be on the Manchester United bench at 20," the manager stated.

"I remember Ronaldo on the bench, Rooney was on the bench sometimes. Juan Sebastian Veron wasn’t playing. I remember all the United history."

Amorim clarified his intentions, adding, "I’m not trying to say to Kobbie, ‘You are a big player here, let’s put him on the bench to show something.’ No, no.

“What I’m saying is the opposite. I just want to help the team to win. And to help Kobbie be a better player.”

Mainoo, who started for England in the Euro 2024 final, is eager for more playing time to secure his spot in Thomas Tuchel's squad for next summer's World Cup.

An opportunity may arise this Sunday against Aston Villa, as teammate Casemiro is serving a suspension.

While Amorim has previously suggested Mainoo is competing with captain Bruno Fernandes for a spot, the two could potentially feature together at Villa Park.

They played alongside each other for the final 30 minutes of the thrilling 4-4 draw against Bournemouth on Monday.
