The 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage is officially underway, with several superstars, dwarf stars, and protostars in full luminosity, looking to outshine one another in pursuit of glory and the ultimate prize for their respective countries.

The World Cup is the purest playground for the biggest participants of the beautiful game. In the nearly 100-year history of the FIFA men's World Cup, there has never been a true "Cinderella" champion like Greece in Euro 2004 or Leicester City in the Premier League.

In the same vein, there has rarely been a left-field candidate for the World Cup Golden Ball; none since Salvatore Schillaci pipped Lothar Matthäus and Diego Maradona to the prize in 1990.

Lionel Messi, Luka Modric, Diego Forlan, Zinedine Zidane, and Oliver Kahn have all won the prize this millennium. Consequently, the likeliest candidates to receive the gong this time around are Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Kane, and Messi, who could claim it for an incredible third time.

Still, we at Pulse Sports intend to keep track of every single noteworthy performer in our live Power Rankings for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball race.

1. Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland is just incredible. The Manchester City ace followed up his incredible 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, during which he scored four goals with the winner in the round of 32 against Côte d'Ivoire.

For his next trick, he fired twice in the second half of their round of 16 clash against Brazil to send the five-time champions packing and continue their incredible run in the tournament.

2. Kylian Mbappe

After an incredible group stage in which he set multiple records and scored four goals in three matches, Kylian Mbappe has begun the knockout round in inspired fashion.

He scored a brilliant brace in the 3-0 victory over Sweden, taking his tally in the competition to six, level with Lionel Messi on the top scorer rankings.

The brace also means he has scored a whopping 10 goals in the knockout round of FIFA World Cup matches, taking him beyond the Brazilian duo Ronaldo Nazário (8) and Leônidas da Silva (8).

He extended that record to 11 goals with his strike from the penalty spot against Paraguay, which sent France into the round of 16.

3. Lionel Messi

Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini, the greatest player of his generation and many before it, began his World Cup campaign in historic fashion, and has continued in the same vein.

Entering the tournament as defending champions and unsaddled with the weight of expectations, Messi played with palpable joy, effortlessly powering Argentina past Algeria with a record-setting hat-trick

Unlike the 2014 World Cup, during which Messi's production slowed down in the knockout round, Messi resumed where he left off in the round of 32 clash against Cape Verde, scoring Argentina's opener and setting up the winner in the stiffly contested tie.

4. Harry Kane

Kane was among the host of stars who came out of the group stage with three goals. His brace against Croatia and the lone strike in the final group clash with Panama placed him on the rankings, but just outside the top 10.

With England headed for a shock exit in the Round of 32 clash against DR Congo, Kane stepped up forcefully, firing a late Brace to send the Three Lions past the Leopards and himself into the top three on these rankings. He stepped up from the spot once again in the round of 16 clash against Mexico, sending England on their way.

5. Jude Bellingham

Bellingham has slowly been building a remarkable campaign, and against Mexico at the Azteca, he took his performance level up several notches.

The Real Madrid star scored two goals in England's 3-2 victory over Mexico, becoming the first player to do so on that ground since Diego Armando Maradona.

6. Ismael Saibari

The opener against Brazil, the winner against Scotland and one of the goals against Haiti, Ismael Saibari became the first African footballer to score in all three group stage matches of a World Cup.

His goals supercharged Morocco's campaign and guided them through a difficult group in which they finished level on points with Brazil (7), albeit finishing second due to goal difference.

7. Ousmane Dembele

The Ballon d'Or winner has finally announced himself at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring a brilliant hat-trick in the 4-1 drubbing of Norway to ensure France win the group and secure a theoretically easier path in the knockouts.

The hat-trick follows his goal in the second group stage match against Iraq, taking his tournament tally to four goals, level with Mbappe and only behind Messi (5).

8. Johan Manzambi

Only managing a cameo in Switzerland's opener against Qatar, Johan Mamzani is becoming one of the revelations of the tournament, scoring three goals in the following two matches.

He scored a brace in the 4-1 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina, a result which all but confirmed Switzerland's place in the next round. He followed up with an assist and the winning goal against Canada, ensuring Switzerland won the group and are set to get a theoretically easier path in the knockout.

Manzambi was again the standout performer in Switzerland's 2-0 victory against Algeria, assistibg the opener after a brilliant run.

9. Mikel Oyarzabal

Oyarzabal started his World Cup campaign claiming a disastrous stat, failing to touch the ball in the opening 30 minutes of Spain's draw against Cape Verde, a tournament record.

Since then, he has not looked back. He scored a brace against Saudi Arabia in the subsequent game and scored another double to help España advance past Austria.

10. Michael Olise

France struggled in the first-half against Senegal, but everything changed when Didier Deschamps made the inspired decision of moving Michael Olise centrally.

He created four scoring chances in the game, two of which were ascribed as big chances, and two of which assisted Kylian Mbappé's brace.

11. Cristiano Ronaldo

After a group stage in which he only managed an excellent performance in the drubbing of Uzbekistan, Ronaldo started the knockout round in scoring form. His penalty helped Portugal equalise against Croatia and eventually spurred them on to victory.
