Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich: Wife of Colombian star expresses delight after QUITTING Liverpool
Colombian sensation Luis Díaz has officially departed Premier League champions Liverpool, completing a blockbuster transfer to German giants Bayern Munich.
And it appears no one is more thrilled about this continental switch than his wife, Geraldine Ponce, who has already taken to social media to express her profound excitement for this "new chapter" in their lives.
What’s the gossip?
Geraldine, who got married to Luiz Diaz in Barranquilla last month, took to social media to share a touching message reflecting on their time at Liverpool and expressed immense excitement for their new life in Munich.
In a statement, via an Instagram post, the mother of two wrote:
"Today starts a new chapter in this story we wrote together. We arrived in a new city, with the excitement intact and the heart ready to give it all, to take on this challenge with joy, with humility and, as always: with family.
“Reaching out to @fbayern means a lot. It's the beginning of a challenging phase, yes, but one that fills us with excitement. We're looking forward to learning about the club, its history, its people and its fans.
“Y a ti, mi amor… I know you're going to give it your all, as always. With your discipline, your huge heart and that dedication that makes you so special.
“I have no doubt this new challenge will find you prepared, as only you know how to be.
"Here I am, by your side, ready to accompany you and live together every step of the way.
“A new city, a new shield... and the same strength that unites and drives us: our family…une la."
Luis Diaz’s blockbuster Bayern deal
The rumour mill had been churning for weeks, but it's now official: Luis Díaz is Bayern’s newest signing.
The transfer, confirmed on Wednesday, July 30, sees the 28-year-old winger leave Anfield for a fee that could reportedly rise to €75 million (£65.5 million).
This makes Díaz one of Bayern's most expensive signings in history, only trailing Harry Kane and Lucas Hernández, as per Transfermrkt.
The Colombian star penned a four-year contract with the Bundesliga champions, tying him to the Allianz Arena until 2029.
Díaz was notably left out of Liverpool's pre-season friendly against AC Milan in Hong Kong on July 26, fuelling intense speculation that his departure was imminent.
Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen expressed his delight saying via the club’s website:
“In Luis Díaz, we have succeeded in bringing in one of the best left wingers in the Premier League. He brings real player character from Liverpool to FC Bayern - he's won silverware with every one of his clubs to date.
“As a team, we were able to work together to realise this transfer in a targeted manner and are delighted to have a top international who will give our team important impetus and also enrich the Bundesliga.”
This signing comes at a crucial time for Bayern, who recently lost Germany forward Jamal Musiala to a long-term injury.
For Liverpool, the sale of Díaz means they've recouped significant funds, with The Guardian reporting that the completion of his deal brings player sales since Richard Hughes became sporting director in June 2024 to over £190 million.
Díaz's Trophy-laden stint at Anfield
Luis Díaz joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for an initial fee of €45 million, making an immediate impact with his electrifying pace and direct dribbling.
His arrival galvanised a Liverpool side already challenging on all fronts under Jürgen Klopp.
During his three-and-a-half years at Anfield, Díaz played a significant role in securing four major trophies.
Most notably, Díaz was a pivotal figure in the 2024/2025 Premier League title triumph, Liverpool's record-equalling 20th English league title.
He enjoyed his most prolific season at Anfield in his final year, netting 17 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions, with 13 of those coming in the Premier League, making him the team's second-highest scorer behind Mohamed Salah.
In total, for Liverpool, Díaz made 148 appearances, scoring 41 goals and providing 23 assists across all competitions.
