Man Utd vs Ipswich: Bruno Fernandes overtakes De Bruyne as 5-star Red Devils silence critics

United came into this game under a lot of pressure after losing their Premier League opener to newly-promoted Hull City.

Manager Michael Carrick included Marcus Rashford from the start but it was captain Bruno Fernandes, who stole the show.

It did not start smoothly. Ipswich, full of confidence after winning their opening fixture, stunned Old Trafford when Leif Davis fired the visitors ahead on 29 minutes, briefly threatening a repeat of last week's misery for Carrick.

United responded immediately. Bruno Fernandes levelled on 40 minutes, slotting home coolly after Matheus Cunha broke clear and played him into the box.

The momentum had shifted completely, and Jacob Greaves' unfortunate own goal on 56 minutes put United in front before Fernandes stepped up to convert a penalty on 61 minutes to make it 3-1, taking him to 73 Premier League goals, one ahead of Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne.

The Portuguese captain completed his hat-trick on 68 minutes, finishing with composure to put the game beyond doubt, before Bryan Mbeumo added a fifth on 82 minutes to cap a stunning team performance.

Ipswich grabbed a late consolation in stoppage time, punishing a sloppy United buildup, but it did little to detract from what was a dominant and clinical display from Carrick's men.
