What happened

Los Blancos were shocked last weekend by Espanyol, losing 1-0 to the Catalan side, which saw their league lead slashed to one point.

Carlos Romero scored the winner, controversially so, as the 23-year-old Spanish full-back escaped a red card earlier in the game. Romero’s high-footed tackle on Kylian Mbappe was deemed a yellow card offence; however, an incident Real Madrid believe should have led to his sending off.

Hence, with the eventual winner scored by him, the angry Los Blancos released a statement announcing they had filed a complaint to the RFEF demanding the audio tapes from the VAR analysis of the incident.

Ancelotti backs his club

Ahead of their Copa del Rey clash against Espanyol, Ancelotti was asked about this club's statement, and he expressed total support, demanding an explanation as to why Romero was not sent off.

“What has happened is that something inexplicable has occurred, speaking above all about the integrity of the footballers, and what Real Madrid is asking for is an explanation, and that seems correct to me. Nothing has been done to protect the integrity of the footballer,” Ancelotti complained.

“What we are asking for is that they explain what happened and nothing more. Yes. What they were thinking. If they don’t give explanations, that means there is a problem. If that is the case, we must fix the problem.

“I shall say again. There is a situation where we need explanations. If the explanations do not arrive, there is a problem, and if there is a problem, it needs fixed. Coming from what has happened at Espanyol, it is an opportunity to make a change. I can only say is that I completely share what statement expresses.”
