Virgil van Dijk was full of praise for the Reds’ stand-in goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who has deputised for Alisson Becker in recent games.

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has extolled the Reds’ second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, whose performances filling in for Alisson Becker have been commendable.

The erstwhile Ringmahon Rangers player has been between the sticks for Jurgen Klopp’s men in Premier League fixtures with Burnley and Brentford due to Alisson’s illness against the former and hamstring injury in the encounter with the latter.

Both games ended in victories for the Merseyside club, leading to the Irishman earning praise from the centre-back.

Van Dijk’s praise for Kelleher

The Dutch defender lauded Kelleher’s world-class abilities while speaking to the club’s official website.

"I always said that he is a world-class goalkeeper,” Van Dijk stated, before acknowledging the challenges of being a backup goalkeeper.

“It is very difficult to be a second keeper but there is no shame in being second goalkeeper to one of, if not the best goalkeeper in the world.”

The importance of confidence and support for Kelleher

Van Dijk went on to highlight Kelleher’s quality and the confidence the team has in him, hoping the shot-stopper’s performances stand him in good stead heading into Liverpool’s league game against Luton Town on Wednesday and possibly in their League Cup final meeting with Chelsea.

“He has to step up now and everyone needs a bit of confidence and everyone should give him the confidence that he will do the job. Everyone needs a bit of love from the outside,” said the 2020 Premier League winner.

“Hopefully Saturday will help him carry on and take that confidence into the next game.

“We need everyone in this whole fight. We are still competing on all fronts and let’s keep this going until the very last moment so we can be successful.”

Kelleher has typically deputised for Alisson in the cup games, notably in the 2022 EFL Cup final against Chelsea, scoring a penalty in the eventual success.

The 25-year-old could be trusted to start when Klopp’s men take on Mauricio Pochettino’s side in February 25’s fixture at Wembley Stadium.
