Ronaldinho praised Lamine Yamal and tipped him to win the Ballon d'Or.

Barcelona legend Ronaldinho declared the Lamine Yamal era at the club started, and he tipped the 17-year-old to win many Ballons d’Or in his career.

The Brazil international was the face of the club for a chunk of the 2000s and Lionel Messi collected the baton, dominating until the start of the 2020s.

Ansu Fati was expected to be next in line, but injury blighted his career. Lamine Yamal has risen meteorically in the past year and has claimed the mantle. As Pulse Sports reported, he will inherit the No. 10 jersey next season.

What Ronaldinho said

While Ronaldinho discouraged comparisons, he spoke glowingly of Yamal, sharing that he enjoys watching the Spaniard. He said it was Yamal’s turn to bring joy to the people, as he and Messi had done in the past, and said the winger is one Ballon d’Or-winning cadre.

“Messi and I have already made history; now it’s Lamine Yamal’s turn,” he said, per Marca. “What he’s shown so far, at such a young age and with so much talent, is extraordinary. I like watching players like him; they’re good for football. I hope he can have a career like ours.

“I’ve never liked those kinds of comparisons because every footballer has his own unique style of play. The important thing is that Lamine Yamal brings joy to the people like I did in my time or like Messi did later.

“I hope he continues the potential he’s shown to date. Lamine Yamal is on the level of winning the Ballon d’Or. There are other great players in the world, but he’s among them. It’s surprising because he’s so young, but he can make history by winning it not just once, but several times.”

Meanwhile, former Barcelona full-back Jordi Alba proffered some pertinent advice to Lamine Yamal in a bid to ensure the youngster reaches the highest possible height.

Alba, 36, was one of the leaders of the Barcelona squad when Yamal made his famed debut against Real Betis on April 29, 2023. He lauded the 17-year-old for the strides he has made in record time, and he implored him to keep improving and stay grounded.
