Lionel Messi has been awarded the best foreign player for the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season.

Argentine Superstar Lionel Messi has been awarded the Ligue 1 Foreign Player of the Season for his exploits at PSG last season, helping them to a record 11th league title.

The 36-year-old leaves the French top flight for MLS's Inter Miami after two seasons but continues to earn plaudits for his impressive second season.

What happened

The former Barcelona man was nominated for the Ligue 1 Player of The Season award but lost out to his teammate Kylian Mbappe.

However, he has been named the best non-French player in the competition in a recent announcement by the league.

Although he only scored a paltry 16 goals for his own lofty standards, below nine other players, Messi led the league for assists this season with 16, five more than the next best, Neymar.

This sums up to 32 goal contributions, and only the Ligue 1 player of the season, Kylian Mbappe, with 34, had more in the entire campaign.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi looked back on his fractured relationship with Paris Saint-Germain fans and how their relationship evolved during his two-year stay

The 36-year-old ran down his PSG contract, despite having a renewal offer on the table, and is now a player for MLS side Inter Miami.

The Argentine superstar was regularly subjected to jeers by sections of the Parisien fanbase.
