Inter Miami star Lionel Messi spoke on his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo after his historic FIFA Club World Cup performance for the Herons against Porto.

For many, the Argentine is the greatest footballer in the history of the sport, a heated and contentious topic, as many others believe that title belongs to Messi’s rival, Cristiano.

After his free-kick goal in the 54th minute that helped Inter Miami clinch MLS’s first victory against a European side, fans of the diminutive magician collected the accolade to stack their side of the debate. Messi’s name for almost the entire length of his career has been associated with Ronaldo, and after the match, he was asked about his relationship with the Portuguese.

What Messi said

The Barcelona all-time top scorer was named the Superior Player of the Match, the Club World Cup’s version of the typical Man of the Match award given to the standout footballer of a game.

After the match, Messi was asked about Ronaldo, and he had the following to say: “I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he’s had and continues to have. He is still competing at the highest level.”

“The competition with him was on the pitch… Each of us wanted to do the best for our team. Everything stayed on the pitch. Off the pitch, we are two normal guys. We’re not friends because we don’t spend time together, but we’ve always treated each other with a lot of respect.”

Ronaldo also spoke glowingly of Messi after a recent success of his own. Following the Nations League triumph with the Selecao, the Portuguese was asked about his eternal rival, and he spoke about his admiration for the Argentine, opening the door to being teammates in the future.
