Nicolas Jackson's Chelsea future is not at risk despite receiving his second straight red card in four appearances, according to manager Enzo Maresca.

Jackson was dismissed only four minutes after coming on as a substitute during the Blues’ 3-1 defeat against Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup

Chelsea were already trailing 2-1 when the striker was sent off, and Flamengo then added a third goal, effectively relegating Maresca’s men to competing for second place in Group D.

Jackson has publicly apologised for his actions, expressing anger at himself and insisting the challenge was unintentional.

Marc Cucurella confirmed Jackson's sadness and apology to his teammates in the dressing room, and the Chelsea head coach has since stated that the forward’s future is not under immediate threat.

“No, the red card has nothing to do with Nico’s future,” said Maresca. “He had the first one against Newcastle when Liam was not even here and another one (against Flamengo).

“I’m not sure that it’s 100 per cent a red card but the referee decided for that, and Nico knows very well that in both situations (it) was not something good for the team.”
