Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is close to joining a new club after completing medicals, according to reports.

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has reportedly completed his medical to join Villarreal as a free agent, despite the rape case hanging over his head.

The 32-year-old left the North London outfit at the end of last season after his contract expired and was immediately brought up on rape charges. However, he has been able to secure a new club, according to The Athletic, despite the charges being unresolved.

Partey set for LALIGA return

According to a report from The Athletic's David Ornstein, Partey has reached an agreement with Villarreal on a two-year deal and will sign as a free agent.

Partey has already completed the routine medicals part of the procedure and is expected to seal the move to Villarreal in the coming days.

The Ghana international will be returning to a division he is familiar with, after spending seven years in the Atletico Madrid first team, after coming through their academy. According to the report, Villarreal's presence in the Champions League was a contributory factor to Partey's decision to join the club.

Thomas Partey rape case

As Pulse Sports reported, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed Partey faces five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman. The alleged incidents spanned between 2021 and 2022.

The Metropolitan Police revealed the investigation first began in February 2022 after an initial report was filed. Partey was first arrested in July 2022 but was not publicly named at the time, allowing him to continue playing for Arsenal. In fact, Partey managed to feature in over 50 matches while on bail.

The midfielder was officially charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault last month and is set for a court appearance at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 5.
