Key match details
Pachuca had the brighter start and were handed an early advantage when Salomon Rondon was fouled by Raul Asensio, who was given a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
Pachuca seized the momentum and created their first significant chance through a swift counter-attack, which Thibaut Courtois expertly denied with a double save.
Despite being down to 10 men, Real Madrid managed to take the lead against the run of play. Jude Bellingham's clever run was picked out by Fran García, and the Spanish midfielder's shot found the bottom corner. Before halftime, Real Madrid doubled their advantage with a beautifully crafted move that ended with Arda Guler scoring.
After the break, Pachuca pushed hard for a goal, and Rondon had a glorious opportunity to score, but his effort sailed wide. However, their chances of getting back into the game were dashed when Federico Valverde scored on a counter-attack. Pachuca did manage to grab a consolation goal, but it was little more than a token gesture, and Real Madrid secured their first win in the tournament under Xabi Alonso.
