Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard has admitted the Blues are struggling with self-confidence after Wednesday's 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat to Real Madrid.

Chelsea deservedly lost 2-0 to Real Madrid at the famous Bernabeu and it really could have been more.

The Blues, who ended the game with ten men after Ben Chilwell's second-half red card, conceded twice through Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.

This was another terrible and listless performance from Chelsea, adding to a list of similar displays this season.

Lampard speaks on Chelsea's difficult period

The Stamford Bridge club have now failed to score in four consecutive games for the first time in 30 years, and Lampard admitted there is little self-confidence within the squad at the moment.

"There was a lot there for us, I felt," he told BT Sport.

"As good a team as they are, I could see a moment where the players, it's been a difficult period for them.

"There's a little bit of a lack of belief. I think the players have got to understand how good they are, and what they can do, and maybe we're a bit short on that at the minute, and it's not easy to come here like that."

Despite the disappointing result, Lampard remained positive and called for continued support from the Chelsea fans as the club aim to turn the tie around in the second leg.

"I don't think, with ten men, that they carved us open," Lampard said.

"At that time in the game, we had our chances. We had three pretty good opportunities from Joao [Felix] early, Raheem [Sterling], and Mason [Mount] near the end."

Up next for Chelsea

The Blues will now turn their attention to Brighton in the Premier League as they try to climb up the table and potentially finish in European places with a strong enough finish.

After that, they welcome Real Madrid to Stamford Bridge for the second leg.
