Madison Keys Biography

Madison Keys is an American professional tennis player known for her aggressive style and powerful serve.

Born in Rock Island, Illinois, in 1995, Keys discovered her passion for tennis at the young age of four after watching Wimbledon on television.

Inspired by Venus Williams, she asked her parents for a white tennis dress and they agreed to get her one if she started playing. This sparked a lifelong love for the sport.

Keys quickly progressed through the junior ranks, capturing the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl title at the age of 12.

By 14, she was already competing in professional tournaments, making her WTA Tour debut at the Ponte Vedra Beach Championships where she defeated world No. 81 Alla Kudryavtseva, becoming the youngest player to win a WTA Tour-level match since Martina Hingis.

Keys continued to climb the rankings, breaking into the top 100 in 2013 and reaching the quarter-finals at the Sydney International.

Her breakthrough came in 2014 when she claimed her first WTA title at the Eastbourne International, defeating two top-10 players – No. 7 Jelena Jankovic in the first round and No. 9 Angelique Kerber – solidifying her place as one of the rising stars in women's tennis.

In 2015, Keys reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open, upsetting reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams before falling to world No. 1 Serena Williams.

She continued to impress, reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and finishing the year ranked No. 18. Keys achieved a new career-high ranking of No. 7 in 2016, reaching the finals of two Premier 5 events and qualifying for the prestigious WTA Finals.

However, she faced injury struggles in 2017, undergoing wrist surgery that forced her to miss the Australian Open.

Despite these setbacks, she battled back to reach the final of the US Open – her first Grand Slam final – where she lost to Sloane Stephens.

Keys continued to be a force on the tour, reaching the semi-finals of both the French Open and the US Open in 2018.

In 2019, she captured her first clay-court title at the Charleston Open and claimed her first WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open.

The American tennis player started 2020 strong with a final appearance at the Brisbane International but faced further injury challenges.

Keys experienced a dip in form in 2021, falling out of the top 50. However, she rebounded in 2022, winning the Adelaide International 2 and reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open. She also reached the semi-finals of the French Open in doubles, demonstrating her versatility on the court.

The 2023 season saw Keys return to the top 10 after winning the United Cup with Team USA. She reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and continued her strong performance at the US Open, reaching the semi-finals for the third time.

Keys carried this momentum into 2024, reaching the semi-finals of the Madrid Open and winning her eighth career title in Strasbourg.

The pinnacle of Keys' career came in 2025 when she won the Australian Open, defeating world No. 2 Iga Swiatek and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka en route to her first Grand Slam title. This victory was her 10th on the WTA Tour.

Keys beat three top-10 opponents en route to her first Slam, getting the better of Elena Rybakina, Swiatek and Sabalenka.

By defeating Swiatek and Sabalenka, No. 2 and No. 1 on the tour, she emulated Svetlana Kuznetsova's 2009 French Open feat of beating the top two players before claiming a Grand Slam title.

Madison Keys defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on January 25, 2025, to secure her first Grand Slam title success.

Sabalenka was a two-time defending champion and sought a three-peat Down Under, but her American opponent won sets one and three to clinch a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory.

Despite entering the final 1-4 in their head-to-head, having lost three previous match-ups, Keys clinched only her second win over the Belarusian to snap that three-match losing sequence.

As of January 25, 2025, Sabalenka now leads their head-to-head 4-2.
