Reports circulating suggest that Super Eagles boss Eric Chelle has requested a gigantic pay rise to remain as head coach of the Nigerian national team
Eric Chelle has reportedly tabled a significant salary increase request to the Nigeria Football Federation as a condition to remain head coach of the Super Eagles.
The Malian tactician is said to be seeking a monthly pay package worth $130,000 (approximately ₦174.2 million), nearly three times his current earnings.
Chelle reportedly demands $130,000 monthly stipend
According to reports, Chelle, who signed a two-year deal in January 2025 with an optional additional year, currently earns $50,000 per month. His new demand, which includes payments for his backroom staff, forms part of an alleged 19-point proposal formally submitted to the NFF.
Chelle was tasked with qualifying Nigeria for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and reaching the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the Super Eagles fell short, exiting at the semifinals of the 2025 AFCON and losing the intercontinental playoffs final on penalties to DR Congo.
Despite those shortcomings, the former Lens centre-back has now requested improved contractual terms, a move interpreted by some as a signal he could be weighing other opportunities.
Eric Chelle linked with moves abroad
Chelle’s current demand represents a sharp rise from his previous salary as Mali’s national team coach, where he reportedly earned about $20,000 per month.
Since the 2025 AFCON, he has been linked with vacancies in Tunisia, Angola and Gabon, as well as a potential opening at French giants Marseille following Roberto De Zerbi’s departure.
The NFF now faces a difficult decision: meet Chelle’s substantial financial terms or risk losing the Super Eagles boss amid growing interest elsewhere.
