The match is remembered for his stunning last-minute free-kick that sent the Fennecs into the final and ultimately paved the way for their continental triumph.

“Well, obviously, when you think about Nigeria, we played them at the African Cup in 2019,” Mahrez said.

He added, “We played them in a friendly, but yes, of course, you cannot forget that moment for me and all our country. It was an incredible moment.”

The former Manchester City winger, now one of Africa’s most decorated players, stressed that while the memory remains special, the focus is firmly on the challenge ahead as Algeria and Nigeria meet again in the knockout stages.

“It’s always good to play against a big team, strong teams. I’m so happy to arrive at this stage again. To be playing with these types of teams, that is where the players belong, and now I am so excited,” Mahrez added.

Algeria booked their place in the last eight after a tense 1-0 extra-time victory over DR Congo, with substitute Adil Boulbina scoring a late winner.

Nigeria, meanwhile, have been one of the standout teams of AFCON 2025, powered by the attacking duo of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, and will be keen to avenge their painful 2019 exit.
