The public feud over Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong's leadership qualities has escalated, with former club teammate Troy Deeney labeling the defender as “insecure” following Nigeria’s 4-1 win over Gabon.

The controversy began when CBS Pundit Michael Lahoud questioned Troost-Ekong’s leadership, claiming the captain only speaks off the pitch.

Troost-Ekong initially expressed "disappointment" that Deeney hadn't simply called him.

He said: “He could have just picked up the phone and called me. If he didn’t respect me, maybe he should take away the Nigeria shirt I gave him — maybe it’s on his wall somewhere.”

Deeney responded sharply on TalkSPORT, dismissing the shirt comment and reiterating that Troost-Ekong’s need to list his achievements proves the point about his insecurity.

“If I remotely cared about giving him a call, I would, but I don't,” the 37-year-old stated.

“You know what happens when someone tells the truth? It hurts.”

Deeney then focused on the captain's defensive remarks:

“Secondly, if you had to tell people how many caps you've had and all that stuff you're doing, you're not that secure in yourself.

“Just chill. Nigeria won. Don't talk about us; let us do the media stuff, you do your podcast. Love you and see you soon.”
