Wirtz joined the Reds in the summer for £100 million, the club's record signing, before the acquisition of Alexander Isak (£125 million) later in the window. Hence, he was expected to have an immediate impact, but has since struggled.

What Wirtz said

The Germany international had to wait until the clash against Wolves, the 18th league game of the season, for his first goal in the division and for the Reds.

Speaking after the game, he expressed his excitement at getting his goal and at their victory against Wolves. "It was very nice for me to score my first goal since I have joined the club. In the end we go the three points and I really happy,” he said, per the BBC

"First it was a long ball from Wolves and we made good contact with Hugo and I was hoping that he saw me. His quality that he gave me with the pass, not everyone will see this pass [too me] but I am thankful he did and he gave me the opportunity today."

Despite his struggles, Wirtz is glad to be in the Premier League, and welcomes its quirks and rigours.

"This year it's nice [not having a Christmas break], last year I was on winter holiday and I was watching football and Premier League so I am sure some of my old teammates were watching me today. I liked it today but sometimes I want to have a bit of a break.”
