The 2025 AFCON is scheduled to begin on December 21 in Morocco, where the Super Eagles will be pursuing their fourth continental title.

However, the team enters the competition under significant pressure after missing out on a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a major disappointment for the nation.

What Awaziem said

In an interview on the club's official website, the former Boavista player emphasised his determination to succeed with the national team.

"Winning the AFCON is my focus with Nigeria," Awaziem stated. "I don't like to dwell on not qualifying for the World Cup. For us, for the country, for our loved ones, we have to correct this mistake."

Awaziem, who has earned 35 caps since his 2017 debut, was recently named in Nigeria's provisional squad.

The 28-year-old is expected to be a key part of the final selection, having been a consistent performer for his club, Nantes, featuring in all 14 matches he has been available for this season.

Nigeria's last AFCON triumph came in 2013 under the guidance of coach Stephen Keshi. Despite having a squad filled with players from top European clubs, the current team has struggled for consistency, often failing to perform even against weaker opponents.

After finishing as runners-up in the 2023 edition, the team's form has since declined, leading to low public confidence.

Host nation Morocco is widely considered the favourite, with other strong contenders including DR Congo, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon.
