Wilfred Ndidi: NFF, NSC release statement after Super Eagles captain loses father to road accident
The Super Eagles, Nigerian Football Federation and the National Sports Commission have all released statements commiserating with Wilfred Ndidi and his family over the loss of his father, Sunday.
According to reports, Mr Sunday Ndidi was involved in a ghastly motor accident in the Umunede area of Delta State. He was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Agbor, where he succumbed to the injuries sustained.
Super Eagles release statement
The Super Eagles' official handle on X released a short but powerful statement of condolence to their captain.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time, Wilfred,” the statement read, as they joined the multitude sharing their well wishes.
NFF’s statement
The federation, through its general secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, expressed sadness and devastation upon hearing the news. He also referred to the timing, as the death came merely weeks after his son led the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the AFCON.
“This is very sad. The player just gave his very best to the nation at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco where we finished with the bronze medals,” the statement read.
“He had returned to Turkey with great motivation and high hopes of helping his club to win silverware this season, and also help the Super Eagles reach new heights this year,” Mr Sanusi said.
“We are really shocked at the moment and cannot say much, but we earnestly pray for the repose of the soul of Mr. Sunday Ndidi and pray that the Almighty God will comfort our team captain, his siblings, relations and indeed all those he has left behind.”
NSC's statement
The National Sports Commission also released a statement via its Director General, Bukola Olopade:
“On behalf of the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko and the Nigerian Sports family, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to Wilfred Ndidi and his family for the unfortunate loss,” Mr Olopade said.
“I know for a fact how close Wilfred Ndidi is to his father and the role the man has played in the success story of his son.”
