'Why Lookman chose Nigeria over England' - Former Super Eagles coach explains
Former Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro has revealed that Ademola Lookman’s decision to represent Nigeria instead of England was driven by a genuine emotional connection to his roots.
Lookman, born in England, previously represented England at the U-19, U-20, and U-21 levels and was part of the squad that won the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Despite progressing through England’s youth system, the Atletico Madrid forward officially switched his international allegiance to Nigeria in February 2022.
What Peseiro said
Speaking during a media session, Peseiro disclosed that the player’s personal conviction made the difference.
“Lookman feels Nigeria. I asked him directly, and he told me he feels Nigerian. I asked another player the same question, and he said he wanted to play for England. I only want players who truly want to represent Nigeria,” Peseiro said.
The Portuguese tactician added that Lookman’s international breakthrough came after he was given greater responsibility in the national team setup.
“He had made his debut before, but he wasn’t always playing. I saw his potential, made him a regular starter, and he exploded,” Peseiro explained.
