Ademola Lookman: Ex-Super Eagles boss Peseiro tells Simeone how to get the best out of Nigerian star
Former Super Eagles coach José Peseiro has offered tactical advice to Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone on how to unlock the full potential of Ademola Lookman following his €35 million move from Atalanta.
Lookman made an instant impression in Madrid, registering a goal and an assist on his debut against Real Betis. However, he was unable to repeat that performance in Atletico’s 1-0 La Liga defeat in their next outing, sparking debate over his best role in Simeone’s system.
Peseiro backs central role for Lookman
Having worked closely with Lookman during his time in charge of Nigeria, Peseiro believes the forward is most effective when deployed centrally rather than out wide.
“On the wing he creates imbalance and makes good diagonal runs, but his best position is as a striker,” Peseiro told Marca.
According to the Portuguese tactician, Lookman thrives when operating in the inside channels, where he can attack space and make decisive contributions.
“He’s very decisive when he’s in the inside channels and sees the space because that’s where he shoots, dribbles, or assists,” Peseiro explained.
Second striker role could unlock Lookman’s strengths
Lookman flourished under Peseiro at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, emerging as Nigeria’s standout attacker. His ability to combine sharp footwork with intelligent movement in behind defences made him a constant threat.
“His greatest strength is his footwork, although it’s true that he’s very strong in behind,” Peseiro added, pointing to qualities that could trouble top sides such as Barcelona.
At Atalanta, Lookman was often used as an inverted winger or second striker under Gian Piero Gasperini, who valued his late runs into the box.
Simeone has already experimented with him in similar areas, and positioning him closer to goal could be key to ensuring consistent impact at the Metropolitano.
