‘We won't return to Mozambique’ - Kambala issues bold statement declaring they will knock Super Eagles out
The Super Eagles, led by head coach Eric Chelle, enter the knockout stage with a perfect record, having won all three of their group matches.
In contrast, Mozambique's journey to the Round of 16 was a historic first for the nation. The Mambas secured their place with a single, dramatic 3-2 victory over Gabon, despite losses to Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon.
The two nations are set to face off on Monday, January 5th, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, with a quarter-final spot on the line.
Kambala expresses confidence
Despite Nigeria's status as firm favorites, the Polokwane City player is adamant that his team will not be returning home early.
"I believe we will advance," Kambala stated. "With the team we have, I clearly believe we will advance. We won't return to Mozambique on January 5th."
Historically, the odds are stacked against Mozambique. They have never defeated the Super Eagles in five previous encounters, securing only one draw and suffering four losses. Their last AFCON meeting in 2010 ended in a decisive 3-0 victory for Nigeria.
Kambala, however, insists that past results are irrelevant and that the current squad has proven its mettle in Morocco.
"We have already shown it on the field; we have already demonstrated that we are not just here to participate," he said.
"We know it will not be an easy game, but I want to thank everyone who has supported us and hope they will continue to support us against Nigeria."
