This is not why we are here - Super Eagles coach Chelle breaks silence after AFCON Group-Stage Coach award
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has described his recognition as the best coach of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations group stage as a major boost for both himself and his players, while insisting that the Eagles remain firmly focused on their ultimate ambition in the tournament.
Chelle received the accolade after guiding Super Eagles to a flawless group-stage campaign, recording three consecutive victories.
The Super Eagles opened their tournament with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania before edging Tunisia and Uganda by identical 3-2 scorelines.
Only Algeria’s Desert Foxes have matched that perfect run so far at the competition.
What Chelle said
“I am happy about this recognition, but I would like to give the credit to my backroom staff who work tirelessly to make the team function,” Chelle told thenff.com.
“This is a good motivation for me, the players, and the entire squad,” he added.
“However, this is not why we are here. We are here for something bigger and better. We will not get ahead of ourselves and think we are the best. We will continue to work hard and stay focused for every match as it comes,” he concluded.
The Super Eagles will now face Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday in Fez.
