Despite dominating nearly 74% of possession, Arne Slot’s side failed to capitalise on their chances, allowing the 19th-place Clarets to escape with a point that sees them lose their grip on the Champions League places.

Wirtz spoke honestly in his interview with Premier League Productions after the game. He expressed his frustrations while candidly analysing their shortfalls in the game

"Very frustrating. We had a lot of chances – enough chances to decide the game early. It's very disappointing,” he said, per the BBC. "There were a few times where we could have made a better decisions.

“We were unlucky in a few moments – like when Hugo's goal was offside – but we didn't have so many big, big chances. In the end, we scored only one goal, and that wasn't enough.

"I felt that we were really good in the game. From the first half on, we played a good game. I think when they scored the equaliser, we were still the better team and had the better chances - but the ball didn't want to go in. It's very disappointing.

"It feels like a defeat. When we had so many shots, we have to score more goals. Some days are like this - you try and everything and the ball doesn't go in the goal. We only take one point but hopefully next game we will do better."

Wirtz joined the club in the summer as a £100 million signing, which could rise up to £116m with add-ons. Despite the price tag, he was not an immediate hit, needing 16 matches to register his first goal contribution in the Premier League. However his form has since improved.

Speaking on his improvement, he said, "I think I'm feeling good on the pitch. The connection with the teammates is really good now. We understand each other better, and I feel this. It gives me more confidence and makes it more fun to play."
