We missed that last year — Amorim hails new boy after Man Utd pre-season win

Bruno Fernandes netted twice to lead Manchester United to a 2-1 victory against West Ham at MetLife Stadium, marking their first pre-season win after a goalless draw with Leeds United the previous weekend.

Matheus Cunha, United’s £62.5m signing from Wolves in June, started and caught the eye of manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach also praised striker Rasmus Hojlund, despite his struggles in the 2024-25 season and transfer rumors, alongside midfielders Fernandes,

Kobbie Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte. In his post-match interview, Amorim said, “All the guys. I don’t want to talk specifically. Rasmus [Hojlund] did well. I really liked Rasmus’s game, the runs, and the way he fought during the game, one against one, when we kicked the ball. He connected with the teammates, so he did a great job.

"Matheus Cunha is the kind of player that can help us; he can help us a lot because he can run with the ball, and that is something that can change the game. We missed that last year."

With three pre-season friendlies remaining before their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17, Amorim emphasized the need to prepare the squad.

“It’s a strong team and we need to prepare all the players, and we don’t have a lot of weeks or a lot of games to prepare all the whole team,” he concluded.
