England manager Thomas Tuchel has sent shockwaves through the camp by admitting that Phil Foden is no longer a certainty for the 2026 World Cup squad.
Despite starting both of the recent Wembley friendlies, the 25-year-old struggled to make an impact, leaving Tuchel unconvinced ahead of the final squad selection.
Foden was given two opportunities to shine: playing as a No. 10 against Uruguay and as a false nine against Japan. In both instances, the Manchester City star failed to recreate the magic that made him a Premier League superstar.
Tuchel casts doubts on Foden's England place
“Phil tried everything. I would say he was excellent in camp, but he struggles to show it on the pitch,” Tuchel admitted following the defeat to Japan.
“He didn't have a lot of minutes for City recently... and he struggles to have the full impact. It’s not a guarantee that he will come.”
Tuchel’s headache is compounded by the "embarrassment of riches" in Foden's preferred positions.

With Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze all fighting for the same creative roles, Foden’s lack of match rhythm at Manchester City has become a glaring liability.
At Manchester City, Foden has noticeably slipped down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order, starting only twice in the Premier League since mid-January.
He was also an unused substitute in both legs of City’s recent Champions League exit to Real Madrid.
For a player who hasn't scored for club or country since December 14, the "Golden Boy" tag is fading fast.
Tuchel has proven he is willing to prioritize form over reputation, leaving Foden with just a few weeks of domestic football to save his World Cup dream.
