The 31-year-old has been in fine form for his club, ranking second in the Turkish Super Lig scoring charts with 11 goals, just one behind Basaksehir's Eldor Shomurodov, despite a recent three-week absence.

Onuachu's comments come amid a successful qualifying campaign for the national team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The forward featured prominently in Nigeria's 3-1 victory over Uganda, where he played 76 minutes and found the net, before another brief four-minute appearance against Mozambique.

Onuachu speak on competition

Onuachu was pleased with the team's overall performance, even though his time on the pitch in the recent match was limited.

"It’s very important. We’re on to the next, on to the quarterfinals, so it’s very important that we won today.

“It’s not always easy to score four goals in an African tournament," Onuachu said. "The team is doing great, you know. The boys are happy. So the Nigerians are happy."

When asked about the rivalry for a starting position, Onuachu praised his fellow strikers and stressed the importance of team unity, regardless of who is selected by the coach.

"I mean, we have good strikers. Victor, Akor, me, Cyriel. I’m sorry he’s injured, but I think Nigeria has good strikers, even the ones that are not here," he explained.

"It’s all about who the coach calls upon to play. I think that they have to give their best. So I mean, we are all good."

He concluded by reinforcing the collective mindset within the squad, stating, "The coach prepares whoever he wants to start, and then we all back them up. The goal is to win. It’s to go to the semis."
