‘Onuachu is family to me’ - Osimhen pleased with Paul’s first AFCON goal for Super Eagles
Nigeria secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over Uganda in the 2025 AFCON competition in Morocco on Tuesday.
The win marked a perfect group stage for Nigeria, who finished with a maximum of nine points from three games to secure their place in the round of 16 as Group C winners.
A key moment in the match was Paul Onuachu's first-ever goal in the Africa Cup of Nations, a milestone celebrated enthusiastically by his teammates and supporters.
Osimhen speaks highly of Onuachu
Speaking to the media after the game, Osimhen shared his delight for the fellow striker. "Paul Onuachu is family to me. I’ve known Paul for so many years," he said. "I’m happy for his first goal with a great performance."
When asked if club-related matters were discussed among the players, Osimhen was quick to emphasise the squad's singular focus on their international duties.
"To be honest, we don't talk about clubs because this is a national assignment. We're just focusing on what lies ahead," the captain stated, highlighting the team's dedication to the Super Eagles' campaign.
With the group stage now behind them, Osimhen confirmed that the team's full attention has shifted to their next challenge in the knockout phase.
"We just focus on the Super Eagles and the matches," he reiterated. "So for me, we just talk about our next opponent in the round of 16. This is what our main focus is."
Following victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, Nigeria will look to carry their strong momentum into the tournament's next round.
