Watch and learn - Ferdinand urges Mainoo to learn from Casemiro’s resurgence at Manchester United
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called on young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to take inspiration from Casemiro’s comeback story, as the academy graduate struggles for regular playing time under new manager Ruben Amorim.
Casemiro, endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford after his move from Real Madrid, with critics once claiming he was past his prime and urging him to leave the club. The Brazilian midfielder, however, has since rediscovered his form and become a key figure in Amorim’s revitalised United side.
Mainoo, meanwhile, has found opportunities hard to come by this season, with the 20-year-old yet to start a Premier League game. His request for a loan move last summer was turned down, leaving him limited to late-game cameos as his hopes of making England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup begin to fade.
What Ferdinand said
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand urged the youngster to remain patient and learn from Casemiro’s resilience and professionalism.
“Watch and learn,” Ferdinand said.
He continued, “There was a player being told he’s not good enough for Manchester United, exactly what Mainoo’s been through. I think character-wise, personality-wise, there’s a lot to learn from Casemiro. Yes, there’s football-wise too, but they are very different players.”
Ferdinand emphasised that Mainoo’s path to success may require perseverance rather than an immediate exit, noting that Casemiro’s turnaround serves as the perfect example of how determination can revive a career at Old Trafford.
Casemiro’s leadership and consistency have been central to United’s improved performances this season, while fans and pundits continue to call for Mainoo to be given more opportunities to prove his talent in midfield.
