Victor Boniface: What proportion of Bayer Leverkusen’s goals has the Nigerian scored?
Victor Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen could add the Europa League title to the club’s Bundesliga when they take on Atalanta in Wednesday’s final.
Outstanding debut season for Victor Boniface
The Nigerian had a storming first half of the season, finding the net 10 times in the first 16 Bundesliga games before an adductor injury ruled him out in the new year.
That saw the 23-year-old miss Nigeria's run to the AFCON 2023 final, but the forward has since returned for Xabi Alonso's men, even if his place in the side is no longer as assured as it was months back.
Boniface added four goals to the 10 netted in the campaign's first half, taking him to 14 Bundesliga goals in 23 appearances (18 starts).
Victor Boniface stats
The striker’s 14 league strikes meant he ended the campaign as Leverkusen’s leading goalscorer, as his return was strikingly 12 shy of Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane.
This underlines the healthy spread of goals for the Bundesliga champions, with Boniface scoring 15.7% of Die Werkself's 89. On the other hand, Kane netted 38.3% of Bayern's 94 strikes.
In the Europa League, Boniface has netted five of Leverkusen's 31 goals on the continent, notably notching four in five group-stage appearances — 31% of the team’s goals in Europe.
Two more strikes this season have come in the DFB-Pokal, where Alonso's men face Kaiserslautern on May 25. The striker’s two goals account for 8.7% of the club’s 23 domestic cup strikes.
What comes next for Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen?
Defeating Atalanta on Wednesday takes Leverkusen closer to unprecedented immortality under Alonso, with La Dea expected to pose a stern test in the continental decider.
Boniface and his teammates could go into Saturday’s final chasing a treble or a double by adding the DFB-Pokal to their maiden Bundesliga crown.
