Reigning heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has extended a message of sympathy and support to former rival Anthony Joshua following reports of a tragic car accident in Nigeria.
Joshua was involved in a collision on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after his vehicle reportedly crashed into a stationary truck.
The accident claimed the lives of two of his close associates and friends, identified as Sina and Latz.
What Usyk said
Reacting to the incident, Usyk took to his official Instagram account to express his sorrow and offer words of encouragement to the British-Nigerian boxer during what he described as a deeply painful moment.
“This is an unbelievable loss. Sina and Latz were two incredible people who were not only part of AJ’s team, but also friends,” Usyk wrote.
“My sincere condolences to their families, loved ones, and everyone who knew them. Anthony Joshua – wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong, champion.”
Joshua and Usyk shared one of boxing’s most notable rivalries with Usyk defeating Joshua in back-to-back bouts to claim and retain the unified heavyweight titles.
Despite their competitive history, both fighters have repeatedly shown mutual respect outside the ring.
