Uganda’s veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has conceded that Nigeria took full advantage of his team’s desperation, a factor he believes proved decisive in their 3-1 defeat to the Super Eagles on Tuesday.
The loss at the Complexe Sportif de Fès brought an end to Uganda’s hopes of progressing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as the Cranes needed nothing less than a victory to remain in contention.
Nigeria Capitalise on Uganda’s Urgency
Going into the decisive group fixture, Uganda were forced to push forward in search of goals, a tactical gamble that left spaces at the back, spaces Nigeria exploited with clinical efficiency.
A brace from Raphael Onyedika, complemented by a goal from Paul Onuachu, sealed a comfortable win for the Super Eagles and confirmed Uganda’s elimination from the tournament.
Onyango Praises Super Eagles Quality
Speaking to the media after the match, the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper acknowledged Nigeria’s superior quality and experience at the highest level.
“We were desperate for goals, and Nigeria punished us. They are a quality side,” Onyango admitted.
While Uganda exited the competition disappointed, Nigeria advanced with confidence, having shown composure and efficiency when it mattered most.
For Onyango and the Cranes, the focus will now shift to rebuilding and learning from the experience, as Nigeria continue their quest for continental success at AFCON 2025.
