Makinwa shared his thoughts following Nigeria’s 3-1 win over Uganda in their final Group C fixture on Tuesday at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, a result that confirmed the Super Eagles’ progression to the knockout stage.

What Makinwa said

Speaking in an interview with Footy Africa, the former striker expressed delight at what he described as Nigeria’s most purposeful performance in recent years.

According to Makinwa, the Super Eagles showed a clear playing identity, highlighted by strong cohesion and sharp transitions between defence and attack.

“The overall performance was impressive. For the first time in a long while, the team looked purposeful. They played as a unit, showed clear identity, and transitioned very well from defence to attack,” he said.

He further encouraged the team to strike a balance between flair and resilience, urging them to combine creativity with tactical discipline.

“They should play with the flair of a Spanish side but win with the character of an Italian team,” Makinwa added.

While praising the team’s attacking intent, Makinwa stressed the importance of improved organisation at the back, particularly during set-piece situations.

He singled out Semi Ajayi as the player capable of taking command of the defensive line.

“I expect Semi Ajayi to take charge of the defence. On crosses and set pieces, the team should use man-marking, with one or two free players attacking the ball. Ajayi should organise the line, same height, same energy, and the right attitude. He should be the defence minister,” he explained.

Despite Nigeria’s impressive group-stage display, concerns remain over their defensive solidity. The Super Eagles failed to keep a clean sheet in all three group matches, conceding goals even after taking early leads.
