UCL: Thank You Lookman — Atalanta boss hails Super Eagles star for early return from AFCON
Ademola Lookman was a standout performer for Nigeria in Morocco, recording three goals and four assists, including a crucial winning penalty in the shootout against Egypt to secure the bronze medal.
While the Super Eagles star was originally scheduled to return to training in Bergamo on Wednesday, he shocked the coaching staff by making himself available a day early.
Lookman’s eagerness to rejoin the squad comes at a vital time, as Atalanta prepares to face Athletic Bilbao in a high-stakes UEFA Champions League clash tonight.
Lookman returns early to help Atalanta in Champions League
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday evening, Palladino expressed his delight at the "professional conduct" and dedication shown by the 2024 African Footballer of the Year.
“On paper, he was supposed to return tomorrow,” Palladino told reporters.
“But, he wanted to play in this game at all costs. He’s showing a sense of attachment to this team, and I’m happy about that."
Lookman’s return provides a significant boost for La Dea, who currently sit in an impressive fifth place in the Champions League standings.
Despite a disappointing 1-1 draw against Pisa in Serie A over the weekend, Palladino believes the return of his best player could be the difference-maker against the Spanish side.
